CA 380

Postby Don » Sun Apr 02, 2017 10:02 am

Been thinking about getting another SNS to tinker with. Could buy a Bersa 380 but what's the fun in that. :D I currently own the CA 32 and had to go through the usual tinkering and headaches but now its a reliable shooter and I even carry it on occasion. I know the 380 zymac guns have slide failures after a while but with proper maintenance and replacing the recoil spring every couple hundred rounds they will hold up longer than expected. So am I just a glutton for punishment or can the CA 380 be turned into a reliable piece? They are still pretty cheap which appeals to me too.

You hit it spot on- the key is proper maintenance, replacing the springs at proper intervals. Do that- you should be okay. Probably. Maybe.

If you have a hankering for this particular gun in .380 I would get the Denali. It seems less likely to have a frame or slide failure, given that the frame is poly and the slide looks to have been beefed up over the previous model.

I've been looking at the Denali pretty closely too. Seems to be less troublesome than the CA 380. Depends on the amount of challenge I want. Probably will go with the Denali if I can find a good price for one.

I bought a CA380 years ago (like 7 or 8 years ago now) and that gun came with a barrel that was just barely rifled. All I can say is please look at the gun you're buying in person very carefully. I didn't, I just assumed that since it was a new gun that it was going to be OK. The first time I shot the gun there weren't any spiral scratches down the barrel, all the scratches just went straight out the barrel meaning the bullet wasn't spinning. The gun keyholed at 7 yards and I wound up taking it back to the gun dealer instead of dealing with Cobra directly. I wound up trading it in towards a used Marlin 22 rifle.

I've got a Denali now and the quality is nice. Leave the grips alone and don't even take them off the gun. They require the use of a very small allen key to get them off. The way they affix the threaded helicoil style inserts to the frame is the only worrisome part of the entire design. other than that the gun is great and a welcome departure from the all-Zamak fare common to SNS guns. The Denali is lighter too so if you're going to carry it you'll notice the difference in weight.

Bus's currently has the Denali for something like $126.00 shipped.
