newbie here, finally got approved for the site

Postby rgabbert » Sun Oct 18, 2015 10:48 am

As stated, newbie. Not to firearms of all types, 60 years of shooting so far. I prefer .22.s, more shooting for the buck.
And I couldn't resist buying an HP22A last month and I'm really pleased with it, Far better than I expected. Did the normal
mods to make it more user friendly and splurged on a set of walnut grips(strongly recommend),
The first time out was not a great success, as the recoil spring neatly wound itself up into a real mess. Probably my fault,
as I was horrified at how dirty the pistol was when I received it. Took a bunch of cleaning patches before the bore came clean. Anyway, I more than likely got the spring wrong when I reassembled, fired three rounds before it jammed open.
Took a bit to get it where I could get it apart. Live and learn. I now have several springs in the range kit, just in case.
I'll do a accuracy report when next I go out. I did add a red dot holo sight, as the vision isn't what it was in the fifty's,
which took adding a picatinny rail using two-part epoxy. Kind of interesting looking, being charitable.

Welcome to the forum! Did you buy the gun used? (just wondering why it'd be dirty from the mothership)
I've got a couple of HP-22s. The recoil springs can be a real hassle to deal with - it's not you.
Taking the gun down can also be an adventure, I've smoothed the edges of the take down lever to save my fingers from getting cut.
You've probably already read that the frame on these can develop cracks if you shoot high velocity ammo - but I've also read that Phoenix has been good about replacing the gun when that happens. (I haven't had to do that)(fingers crossed)

Thanks for welcoming me, folks.
I bought the hp22a new from Buds, not the cheapest but they normally
have pretty good service.
I've read up pretty thoroughly on the HP22A before I bought it and bought
250 rounds of standard velocity specifically for it, I can't recall the
last time I bought standard velocity other than Eley.
I can't explain why the bore of the pistol was as dirty as I
found it, surprised me no end, never had that happen previously.
As I said, I highly recommend the walnut grips, not cheap,$29.95 +
shipping, but to me, well worth it. They look great(IMHO) and thicken the
grip a smidgen, really feel nice in the hand.
About all I have left to do, at least at the moment, is look carefully
at the LRHO mags for the pistol, no longer on ebay so I need to run down the
individual who listed them.
Need some instructions for posting pics.

I bought the LRHO follower and used it for a while, but in the end I wasn't all that impressed with it and I removed it.
