Clearing the Phoenix Arms HP22A

Postby FordMan59 » Mon Nov 14, 2016 8:10 pm

Lots of people complain that clearing the HP22A is a problem with all the safeties and that you have to clear it one round at a time by continually racking the slide until the mag is empty. That's not correct. I just wanted to let everyone in on two quick way to do it. First and easiest way is rack the slide back clearing the chamber and lock it open with the safety then drop the mag, the gun is cleared. Second way with the safety on drop the mag, while pulling the mag from the mag well keep downward pressure on the safety toward the fire position, during extraction it will hit a spot where the safety will drop down into the fire position. Once it's in fire position completely remove the mag and rack the slide it will extract the round in the chamber and the gun will be clear. No modifications necessary to the safeties. Hope this is helpful to anyone who doesn't want to modify their gun. I never use the hammer block safety and haven't made any modifications to the trigger safety on either of my HP22A's, I don't have one of the .25's, but would expect them to work exactly the same way.

The extra safeties of the HP22A and HP25A really cause a "safety dance".

I've been using the first method for a long time. People doing it any other way are making it harder than it needs to be.

I don't think I have ever cleared a semi-auto pistol without first removing the loaded magazine. All that slide racking seems like a lot of extra work!

I did read in Ian Fleming's first 007 book how James Bond cleared his Beretta .25 by racking the slide repeatedly until it was empty.....never made sense to me.
But that one paragraph DOES illustrate why James Bond could not have carried a Beretta 950 at that time. It would have to have been a 418 or earlier model.
