RG 23 exrator tear down.

Postby Papa G » Wed Nov 19, 2014 4:12 pm

I have asked about this before trying to get the extractor out of the cylinder. Comparing a schematic with the revolver, there is an extractor screw that fits over the rod and screw into the yoke. The exposed end of the screw has 8 points with flats between each point. I am guessing there must be a special tool to remove the screw. Got no idea where I can find such a tool, probably RG had the only ones.

Any ideas?

Would the proper tool have a male or female end? I have some eight point automotive bits, don't know how small they go.

I assume the tool would be male. The recesses in the screw are very very small so what ever was used would have to be really thin walled.

I found a fairly good picture of what the screw is like.

If you're referring to the odd hex that surrounds the ejector rod it looks like an eight point bit, however I don't see how you would get it over the ejector rod. I don't have anything even close to that.

Hmm. I was thinking of some kind of a deepwell socket to go over the ejector rod, but the ejector rod looks pretty thick. You may need something like a spanner to do it. There are small spanner wrenches available at harbor freight tools that might do the job.

They're intended for taking the lenses out of cameras I think, but they'd probably be small enough for a job like yours.

I thought about using the inside jaws of a vernier caliper, but you'd probably wreck the caliper in the process or at least make it so that its not accurate anymore.

I knew an old time camera repairman. He made his spanners out of needle nose pliers by filing the ends to shape. You could do the same with a long nose pair.
