1963 RG10 Serial Number Date

Postby robertsontradingpost » Sun Nov 25, 2012 7:28 am

We're new on the forum, but not new to RG Revolvers. We have a couple specimens that have a date code on the upper left side of the frame. One of them has a 680000 range serial number, no suffix or prefix, and it has the digits 63 on the frame among the proof marks, right there in that pot metal. This is a 1963 gun for sure, because we received specimens in the 700000 range in early 1964 direct from Eig Cutlery in Miami, the principal importer at the time. I personally rode many times with my father in a 1957 Chevrolet Pickup to go to Miami and pick them up from Mr. Saul Eig. Mr. Saul and Mrs. Lois were great friends with my parents, Fred and Gladys Robertson.
Soon as I have time, I'll post what I have by way of serial number dates. This '63 RG10 has the shrouded ejector rod, I believe the later ones dropped that and had screw-in cylinder pin / ejector rods. Very important for us, this is our first documented C&R Eligible RG10, it will be C&R Status as of January 1 2013.

How cool is that?

Hm, I think I've eyeballed some stuff you've listed on one of the gun auction sites.

Hey John, is great to have you here with us. I always wondered if Eig was a name or acronym. I've seen it both ways.

C&R stands for Curios and Relics. You can get a Type 03 C&R license from the ATF that will allow you to buy directly certain guns that are classified by the ATF as curios or collectibles and any gun that is over 50 years old is considered a relic and is C&R eligible also. Many military surplus collectors have a C&R license. I have one and I believe several other forum members have a C&R license in addition to the two members that are FFL license holders.

I've got mine as well. I'll expand what LCP says about "buy directly": it means that you can purchase C&R firearms from sellers across the country and have your purchase come directly to your address. There are no gun shop fees involved. Not everyone accepts a C&R however -and there is no requirement that they have to; but my local gun shop has been kind enough to not charge me their standard fee for a C&R gun that a seller has insisted on sending through them
