9mm-45acp in 1911 differences

Postby bitsman » Mon Sep 08, 2014 8:15 pm

Well... I have finally saved enough to put a 1911 on layaway... and I am debating caliber at this point.... I have looked at 1911's in both 9mm and 45acp and since I could not really strip them down to get a better look.. If anyone knows.. what are the differences between them.. The ATI 45 looks.. feels... seem to weigh exactly the same as the same gun in 9mm... Are the only difference the barrel and mag? Are triggers, bushings, hammers, springs, beaver tails.. ect..ect... all interchangeable?

Reason i am asking is simply financial at this point.. since my carry gun is a 9mm..CPX-2.. stocking one caliber is a little more doable at this point.. Plus.. I am trying to talk my father into "RENTING" me his Colt Officers Model... He has not shot the gun in 15 years almost... Just wipes it down with an oily diaper every now and then...

Basic parts - trigger, bushings, hammers, beaver tails should be the same if it's a true 1911 (not a wannabe lookalike). Recoil springs, barrel, slide, and magazines are not going to be the same.

While I agree a 1911 that isn't a .45 is a bit of a let down, I do understand that financial aspect of ammo costs.
And although you didn't mention it, you really can't cheaply swap a 1911 .45 over to 9mm - it gets pricey. You'd need a new barrel, slide, recoil and even it's a "perhaps".
Good discussion here on the topic of conversions: http://www.defensivecarry.com/forum/defensive-carry-guns/7006-1911-45acp-conversion-9mm.html

However, it sounds as if there may be a very nice 1911 in your future. Personally I'd go .45 in the 1911, that's what JMB designed it to fire. If I wanted to go 9mm, I'd go to a Browning High Power (or FEG clone) using the same rationale: tht's what they were designed to fire. JMHO.

Get the RIA 9mm/.22 TCM combo, that is the one that I want. That .22 TCM is an interesting round.

Thank you... It would not be a swappable thing.. Only thing I would consider buying down the road would be a 22lr conversion for it... That is IF 22lr ever comes back decent enough supply. I agree.. the best round would be the one the weapon was designed to fire..

I have had several of the ATI 1911's in the store and they are a very good and affordable weapon. I believe the frames are the same in both calibers, just a change in mags and top end. I support your decision to go with 9mm and keep the caliber selection the same as your other carry gun. Keeps things simple and less confusing.

This...I understand the desire to keep the ammo cost down, and I've considered a 1911 in 9mm and may get one someday, but for your first 1911, and definitely if it's going to be your only 1911, you want it in .45 acp! You'll probably end up regretting it if you don't. The ATI 1911s are very competively priced right now and I've read good things about them, but I don't own one. I do own a Rock Island Tactical, which is similar and it's a very nice gun. Good luck with your decision.
