How old is my J22

Postby SteveC » Sun May 13, 2012 6:16 pm

After I bought my Jennings J22 I was trying to find out when it was made. I read that they were hard to find out the age of them. Mine has the safety that slides front to rear, says Jennings Firearms, Inc Chino California USA, and under the grip on the safetys side it is stamped with either a large P or maybe a flag with MC inside it.

Does the serial number start with a zero? You don't need to share the entire serial number on here. They began production in (I believe) 1978ish. By the mid 80s they had calwestco and all that jazz, so maybe late 70s or early 80s.

Chino california was the location of their first headquarters. I don't know exactly when they moved.

The serial number is 25x,xxx.

Were the serial numbers sequential from 1 up to whatever the current serial number on the newest JA-22?

My JA-22 is about a year old and is in the 1,145,xxx range.

Maybe we can come close by doing the math? Start 1977 thru 2011 = 34 years. 1145000 / 34 = 33600 or so produced every year on average?

That would place the 25x,xxx gun at about the 7th year model - 1984 maybe????

I have a Jennings J-22 s/n 107XXX that was sold NIB at a retailer in mAssachusetts in November 1983; I have the original sales slip.
I dunno know what it proves, but there you have it.

The only thing I was thinking of with the serial number thing is that the ones starting with zero would be the oldest. I have one that's 036XXX and that's the lowest serial number J22 I've ever encountered.

I bought mine NIB in 1985. It of course could have been made a year or so earlier.

Safety goes forward to fire

It has Chino on the slide and a S/N of 203,xxx

That fits with getvicious' math of about 34,000 per year since 1978.

My guess is SteveC's is about 1986 or 1987.

By 86 or 87 weren't they calwestco? I need to make a legit timeline for these guns.

Flowmaster,

You are correct, the name change occured and asset transfer in 1985, but we don't know when in 1985 or how many already marked slides were in production. So there is quite probably some Chino production in 1985.

Mine came from a fairly high volumn dealer in Houston TX in March of 85. That would point to mine being made in 1984. Based on all that I revise my SWAG to 1984/1985 for SteveC's pistol.
