J-22 Barrel Swap

Postby martin08 » Sun Oct 21, 2012 3:59 pm

One of my earliest J-22's was, simply put, just plain old worn out. Key-holing was continuous, and the slide was looking rather ratty. It was time to refurbish.

Using a 3/32" pin punch, with the frame supported on two blocks of wood, the barrel retaining pin starts out from the left side to the right.

Once the pin is out, the frame can be supported in a vise, using protection (rag) between the vise jaws and the frame. With the punch, the barrel can be tapped forward through the shroud.

The pin retaining slot in the replacement barrel can be observed. Note the position of the extractor notch recess in both the barrel and the frame, and use your best judgement for alignment of the notches when beginning installation.

Using a plastic or rubber dead-blow hammer and very light tapping, start the roughly aligned barrel into the front of the shroud. Tap in until the barrel reaches the rear of the shroud, and the extractor notches mate up. For final alignment, pass the pin punch through the retaining pin hole.

Start the barrel retaining pin in from the right side, and set it until it is just below flush level with the frame.

And finally, for aesthetics only, a Bryco slide was installed. The final product looked much better, but more importantly, it was once again cutting round holes in the paper.

Great post and pictures. I copied a locked version to the Gun Tech section, as a few have asked how to do a barrel swap over the years. Thanks again!

Thanks guys.

Yes, this was a Sticky in the old forum. I still had the pictures, so it was only prudent to revive the process.

And, I still have the Jennings/Bryco hybrid. Nice little shooter!
