result of 25ACP rounds cooking off

Postby adam01364 » Tue Mar 03, 2015 7:34 pm

I purchased a damaged Beretta 21A chambered in .25ACP. The story as to how it came to be in the sad state it was in when I purchased it was the owner stored it in a secret compartment in his fireplace. Light a roaring fire and... "Pop, pop, pop, pop..'. and it wasn't Jiffy Pop!

You can see the damage to the grips and the mag in this picture. (some of the mag damage was from the guy trying to force out the mag)

I was able to Dremel a few problematic bulges and them took a brass punch and creased the center of the magazine on both sdies, causing it to collapse inward and in doing so, it pulled the front and rear of the mag inward as well. After that, I liberally sprayed it with PB Blaster, let it sit for a little bit, and then I put some pins thru the holes in the mag, and gently tapped the mag out, re-positioning the pins as the mag moved out of the well. Took about 10 minutes total.

The pistol dry fires fine with snap caps, and as soon as this unreal snow melts, I'll take it to the range and carefully try some real ammo. VERY carefully.

Here's the damage to the mag. (The red square box was my Dremeling, the circles are damage from the cooked off rounds) Mind you this is an OEM Beretta mag- not some chintzy aftermarket job.

Looks like the gun itself survived pretty well.
I would not have wanted to be there when they were popping off :o
Other than the mag and grips, looks like it should be ok.
Keep us posted on the progress and good luck dealing with the snow.

The gun appears to be in very good shape all things considered.
And I've come to realize there's a reason SNOW is a four letter word.

Yup, and yes, I did. Biggest obstacle -after getting the magazine out- was reassembling the safety. The little plunger that goes into the detent in the safety is the biggest PITA ever. Took me an eternity to get in right and to work.

I am surprised that there wasn't more damage. 25 auto is pretty anemic but I figured it'd cause more damage than that!

The frame in the area of the mag was very slightly splayed apart, but other than that, there was no other damage. I didn't even notice the splayed frame until I tried to put grips on it. I closed up the splayed area -very carefully- using a pair of pliers.

Be careful, as the heat treating of the metal in the gun is now toast... possibility of failure is pretty high...
