Best advice I've ever seen on defensive firearms

Postby FergusonTO35 » Mon Mar 28, 2016 10:59 am

I found this gem of wisdom spoken by a gentleman who goes by the handle WWB over on the Ruger forum:

Unless you expect to be confronted by an entire armed platoon, which is quite unlikely, there is no need for ultra-high capacity magazines. A bit of wisdom I brought back from Vietnam: It ain't who shoots first and it ain't who shoots most; it's who HITS first. A corollary - the sooner you kill that SOB, the sooner he'll quit shooting at you. The ability to hit what you're shooting at trumps all others, and hanging 47 accessories from a cheese-grater forearm and having a 30 round magazine won't help that - practice will.

My version of an all-purpose defensive weapon - a 1911. If I can't get the job done with 8 rounds, I oughta be runnin' instead of fightin'.

YMMV

Agreed, that's very sage advice. It's all about shot placement.

yes you have to hit i agree. i just dumped the whole pistol thing an have gone to shotguns and trench coats LOl.

seriously though. Things are a little different now. There ARE entire hoards that rush people as we have seen the last few years. Even old men in wheel chairs. everyone think in terms of one solution for every scenario and i dont get it. these days conceal-ability is not really an issue with all the carry options and clothing styles. Put a desert eagle in a diaper bag and nobody will notice. i just think in terms of matching you carry options to whatever environment your in. have three or four (or more) guns you are really comfortable and efficient with and use in your carry rotation. i dont see anything wrong, with carrying backups and additional mags either. Even a second primary is a valid option and through the whole backup concept out the window.

there are lots of desperate people out there with firepower, often its NOT one on one, and many dont seem to care if you have your wife or kids with you or not. In some ways i think caliber takes a back seat to capacity these days. accuracy is always king as long as you dont run out of bullets. If your combining small caliber with low capacity you need to incorporate running really fast into you defensive tactics as that should be your first course of action.

Got to agree with David Vincent. Problem is that robbers usually bring a buddy for their own safety. People looking to prey on the weak know that more people also means they're less likely to encounter resistance.

I like large mags. Practice is absolutely important but an analysis of police shootings will show that even people who practice are far from 100% when their lives are on the line.
