410/45LC derringer Kit

Postby bitsman » Sun Jun 23, 2013 10:38 am

Anyone ever build one of these kits... I ordered the side plates and breech face this morning... with shipping it was about $21... the actual single barrel derringer kit will run about $50 with shipping... Found what appears to be a very well written set of instructions in PDF form that I downloaded and will read then re-read and re-re-read to make sure I knoww hat I am doing prior to starting... The Breech face has to be brazed to the side plates.. having never brazed anything I am curious if anyone has experience in doing one of these....

Here's the link to the site that has the side plates/Breech Face kit... http://www.theflatspot.net/derringer-45lc410-sideplates--breech-face.html

Unfortunately, you are on your own, though all of us here are cheering you on. (And Want Pictures!)

Essentially, you're buying a parts kit, and parts aren't quite as available as you might like (like, uh, I've been there). The side-plates you mention are, as far as I know --- very good, but they require welding or some such other preparation that exceeds normal garage capabilities. But, hey!, We want to see more as the project progresses!

Very cool! Pics please! Where did you buy your parts? I've toyed with building one of these guns myself, I'm going to enjoy watching your progress

I had trouble finding a couple of parts for my Leinad model D derringer and had to do a lot of digging but if you call the company directly they'll sell you the parts, although they're not cheap. The thing is that the company's contact information isn't easy to find, even online, but I managed to find it.

Soon as the parts arrive and I have a good understanding of what I am about to undertake I will post regular updates on my progress... If you go to the link I posted that is where I bought the Side Plates and Breech face.. on the bottom of that page there are two PDF files.. One is a set of instructions and the other is a catalog for a company named Excalibur.. They do not have a website but they seem to have all kinds of parts for many different builds... Prices seem decent...

Here's another for the derringer parts kits... http://www.practicaltacticalky.com/oldSite/Leinad.html

Side Plates and Breech Face arrived today.. Look to be made a quality steel... 1/8 inch thick... will post pictures soon as camera charges.. Main parts kit should arrive middle of next week... This is gonna give me an excuse to go out and buy a MIG welder that I have been wanting... Be able to make some nice knock over 22 and 9mm targets... Trying to come up with a nice dueling tree design as well that is portable....

I'm looking forward to this project... you know, if you could develop a jig to fit the side plate and breech plate into parts into so that they are parallel and properly aligned for welding... you could mail around said jig to your BJJA brethren so that those of us with less welding experience (I'm looking in the mirror) could build their own derringer kit too.

Yeah Adam... I thought about the Jig thing... These are not really high precision guns so the alignment is not a critical as one may think... Pretty much if the barrel closes and locks up.. and you can not see to much of them brass in the chamber you are good to go...

There is/was someone on gunbroker selling the bare plates a while back. I think someone had a thread going on the old bryco forum about it. I'd totally take on a project like this if I could weld. With the right tools this should be a good learning experience for ya.
