Postby FergusonTO35 » Thu Aug 06, 2015 11:23 am

I'm helping an acquaintance sell his AR-15 and accessories so he can do some home repairs. This is how he described it to me:

Double Star 16 Heavy Barrel carbine
OEM 30rd metal magazine
OEM 20rd magazine
4 plastic Magpul magazines (1 with ammo viewing window”
UTG tac light (no battery)
Bi-pod
Tan sling
Magpul grip w/storage
Hand rail
Gas tube rail (4 sided)
Vortex red/green dot Strikefire sight
Blackhawk carrying case with 5 magazine pouches
Bucket of over 500 rds of 5.56
Ammo can w/approx 500 rds of .223
UTG flip up sights
Possibly some other items
Asking $1300 for everything obo

I told him the price is high, he said he would consider any offers. I'll upload a picture when I get a chance.

No, fortunately he is local and just doing some upgrades. I was looking at AR's today and was amazed at the good deals you can get. Ruger now has a basic one out for only $579.95 and its pretty sweet. My favorite shop has AR lowers that are made up the road in Hebron for $49.95 each. I may try to cut a deal with the guy on his ammo. I've always wanted a .223, not necessarily an AR.

The part that sucks is we're in a terrible time to be selling a used AR15. The market is flooded with brand new ones under $600 and even at those prices they're not flying off the shelves.

RIght now you can get 1,000 rounds of brass-cased 223 ammo for $300, so that's 30 cents a round. I saw Wolf Gold 55gr at the gun show last weekend and it was $300 for 1,000. The same prices are available online from SGammo and TargetSportsUSA if you want to pay shipping on top of that $300. So he's got 300 bucks worth of ammo sitting there at the very least as long as its brass. Even if its steel cased, you're talking $240-250 in ammo.

He may do better splitting it up and selling stuff on local gun-related forums or armslist if that website is used in your area. Parting it out may get him some money coming in more quickly than he would waiting around for someone to buy the whole package. Someone is going to want that optic, someone else will want the ammo. That sort of deal.

The Anderson lowers seem to be pretty good according to reviews online. They sell a lower that has an integrated trigger guard now.

I told him that is what he needs to do. I suspect his AR setup was bought during the panic and now he needs to get his money back out of it, which ain't happening. The ammo and optical sight would be pretty easy to sell. He would have to be willing to make a heckuva deal to sell the rifle since you can buy the same darn thing brand new for under $600.00. Next time I see him I'll suggest he put it on GB or see if a shop would consign it.

It wouldnt surprise me if many of the people who are buyi g AR's are just sitting on them, waiting to triple their money when the next panic hits. After Colt announced bankruptcy the owner of my local shop cashed in his 3 Pythons, none of which were rare models, for $12,000.

I worked a gun show over the weekend. The dealer I was helping out had 3 or 4 of the S&W M&P-15 rifles out for sale. They were priced wrong. Someone at the gun shop put 449 on them instead of 549. Even at that stupid-low price they didn't sell. That'll tell you how bad the AR market is right now.

I think you're right. During the panic Anderson lowers were selling locally for $200 apiece. Recently they're $49.99 and you can dicker.

Morning of Sandy Hook there were two Tec-9's at a local shop for $350 each. I wanted one but thought the price was ridiculous so I skipped it. Three days later the Tec-9 was selling for $600. If I'd known how crazy the prices would be I'd have bought them both and traded them toward something I actually wanted, like another Tristar L120 or an XD Tactical.

Thread drift here but - just before Sandy Hook I had bought a Hi-Point 995 with a bulged barrel. I sent it back to Mom to be fixed, had them add the TS stock. It came back to me after the tragic event had taken place and -typical Mom, she gave me a brand spankin' new 995TS (with my old serial # on it) plus another mag. I was in the middle of my divorce and needed an infusion of cash, so I decided to list it on Gunbroker; it sold for $400.
