Tillander Grips on Ja-22 + longterm wear update with Pics!

Postby Banned for Life » Wed Dec 28, 2016 7:30 pm

Hi all.

I somehow cracked my right side Grip panel on my J-22 last weekend when we took it out with the HP carbines. I ordered these grip panels like 2 days ago on Ebay from Tillander grips.
http://tillandergungrips.com/ I was just going to replace them with some stock panels but I saw these and got them. I think they look pretty neat on the pistol. Like a metallic bluish look to them. Gun functions just fine with them. I have used Tillander grips before on a few JA-nines I had and they worked alright.

Also I took the opportunity to take some pics of the wear on the inside of the pistol and slide. Slide has peening on the underside from the trigger bar that is visible on the right side and lots of wear on the frame wear barrel is pressed into. I used to run Frog lube on this but I now solely use Hoppes choke grease on it now. I coat all the areas that show wear on it with the grease on a qtip. I clean it after most every range trip.

This gun has a absolute Sh*t ton of ammo ran through it. Its above 8k for sure and mostly has been Blazer waxed lead ammo. I bought dozens of bricks when they were $13 for a k a few years back I also run cci minimags and veloci raptors through it. Velociraptors will knock down steel plates on a falling plate stand! It has had a new firing pin mounted a few years back, I thought the factory pin had broken but it turned out it was a ZAMAK chip stuck in it. I still have factory pin sans orange indicator. I have wore out 2 mags with the gun. Hence the last post about looking for some. I have 8 functional mags for it. I need to get a recoil spring for it. I have stretched this one out to keep it running.

I may try and find a chrome slide for it at some point or polish it like I did my HPs. Its a runner and still fun to shoot! If you don't have one of these get one they are Super fun!

Those grips do look good.

There is a significant amount of peening on the sides of the slide. The deformation in the firing pin channel looks not that uncommon to me, I've got a few B/J/JA guns with similar wear patterns but mine seem to be mostly on the firing pin channel.

the Peening is from the exposed trigger bar on the right side of the frame. You can see that bar on above the right grip when you have your slide off. All this deformation was done in 2k or so rounds. It hasnt gotten any worse since. Self clearing essentially.

The 2 firing pin channel deformations are there from the factory on all these iterations of the J-22. Its isolated to two areas. One near the front of the channel and one towards the back. They are from the Die casting process. These two areas are where Gates or bridges are cast into it to keep the channel stable during the casting process. Once cast they are impact driven out of the channel and cause the markings you see in it. They essentially break these gates off leaving the circular flaws.

You can see these two castings flaws in any version of the J-22. Heres a Bryco and a Jennings slide. They both show these two circular flaws towards the front and rear of the channel that show some chipping.. None of these slides show the peening on the right side like mine has. But I highly doubt any of these have had anywhere near the amount of ammo ran through them as mine has.

If that's not an endorsement for the little JA22 I don't know what is. Not bad considering the round count.

Once you get them running good the J-22/JA-22 are great little pistols for sure. 356 did an endurance test on one and got it past 13k rounds before the slide finally cracked. Now, this was done with no parts replacement whatsoever. If he had done recoil and firing pin spring changes every few thousand rounds it likely would have lasted even longer.

I can definitely see the slide cracking with a weak recoil spring. Consumables are cheap for most guns so you might as well replace them. I'm going to order a few recoil springs and fp pins for mine. I'd like to get it to 20k. It doesn't look that bad... :) I need to start shooting the hoard of 22lr I stole away from all the neckbeards that were buying it and re-selling it for out there prices.

That was a challenge in of itself!

This post made me dig out my JA-22 and compare.
Same stuff on the slide, just not to the extent of those pictured here.
I am a firm believer in replacement of critical springs. Especially in the inexpensive crowd we covet.
Springs are cheap insurance for reliability, and safety.
