.45 Mag

Postby Stik » Wed Mar 14, 2018 6:36 pm

Looks like there's a new hi-cap mag for the .45 ACP. No big deal right? Well this one looks to have double to single stack design. IIRC correctly the double stack Makarov was of a similar design and it didn't work very well. I wonder how this will work for the HP?

they can work if done correctly but its a very complicated system. Neat that someone is giving it a shot. Lamma Omni was another gun that used this method in 9mm. Promag has also done this with 40s&w in some of their mags. The biggest hurdle is designing a follower and spring system that works to funnel the rounds through the bottleneck shoulder area of the mag and keep enough stability that the follower remains stable when fully loaded. The makarov hicaps used a two tier follower and double spring system which actually works pretty well but nowhere near that of the original single stack mak mags.

I would say it overcomplicates things too much IMO. The entire setup is going to be very sensitive to spring wear, follower wear, and ammo sellection resulting in a nightmare to keep tollerances exact in manufacturing. Since the magazine is one of the main aspects of pistol overall functioning It is kind if a dicey proposition. Due to the facts that hipoints have such loose tolerances it my not be too bad though.

I am glad to see someone giving it a shot though. Might have to pick up one of the newer hipoints to play with. Strange that all my hipoints are older versions. I was holding out for a 10mm pistol but all these new mag options have me contemplating a 45acp.

I was thinking that I may have to try one (or four). I have a couple of 14/15 round 1911 mags that work reasonably well in the HP, but I suppose 20 is better than 15. I'd like to see someone else try them first.
