Savage 340 Series E in .223 Rem

Postby adam01364 » Wed Dec 12, 2018 6:40 am

I was on my way to a local big box retailer (NOT Dick's) to buy a Mossberg 702 Plinkster just because, but I stopped at a LGS to check out what they might have.
I'm walking along the rack, and I spot this .22 rifle. Then I realize it's not a .22, it's only priced like one at $125 cash. I offered $100, the counter offer was $110 out the door, and I couldn't resist.

It's a Savage 340 Series E chambered in .223 Rem. I know that they're supposed to average rifles, but I'm pretty happy about the condition and the price.

Now I just have to learn everything I can about what I've got tucked in my safe.

Why was it so cheap? That's like crazy cheap. I'm left handed, so I've turned down many good deals on bolt guns over the years.

Agreed, and I dunno <shrug>
It was factory drilled for a scope, which is missing, but Numrich has the factory scope mount in stock, so I'll get it.
The magazines only hold four rounds, but so what?
Googling reveals that apparently .222, 17 hornet, and 30-30 were the more popular rounds for it...
<another shrug>

I have a Steven's 325 (same gun, with a less fancy stock) in 30-30. I remember paying less than $140 for it, so a bit more than you paid for your .223. My 325 has been a great gun, as accurate, or more, than any lever act 30-30 and I can shoot Spitzer bullets in it. The bolt head only has one locking lug (the other is the bolt handle), it's plenty strong but gets a bad rap from the Winchester 70, or Remington 700 only cloud. Either way, neat gun and a good find

Thank you sir! I've really enjoyed shooting it, and have since mounted a scope on it. Now I just have to get out to the range with it!
